Preparing Your Home for Exterior Painting

A comprehensive guide to preparing your home's exterior for painting, including cleaning, repairs, and weather considerations.

A successful paint job starts well before the first coat goes on. Proper preparation can make all the difference in how the paint adheres, how long it lasts, and how good it looks. Whether you’re repainting to freshen up your home’s appearance or getting ready to sell, following these steps ensures the best possible result.

  1. Inspect and Repair Surfaces
Before anything else, walk around your home and check the condition of the exterior. Look for:
    Cracked, peeling, or blistering paint
    Rotting timber or damaged cladding
    Cracks in render or brickwork
    What to do:
Patch holes, fill cracks, and replace any damaged boards or trims. This creates a solid, clean base for new paint to adhere to—and avoids the risk of painting over issues that could worsen over time.
  2. Wash the Surfaces Thoroughly
Even if your exterior looks “clean,” dust, dirt, mildew, and pollution can build up and affect how paint sticks.
We recommend pressure washing the entire exterior 1–2 days before painting. In high humidity or mould-prone areas (like Brisbane’s subtropical climate), consider using a mould-killing solution during the wash.
  3. Mask and Protect Surrounding Areas
Once the house is dry and clean:
Cover windows, doors, light fittings, and garden beds with plastic or drop sheets
Tape around trims, gutters, and fixtures
Move any outdoor furniture, cars, or BBQs away from the painting zone
Taking this step seriously protects your property and keeps the site tidy.
  4. Trim Landscaping
Make sure we (or your painters) can access all exterior walls:
Trim back overgrown hedges, vines, and branches
Mow lawns and clear any items near the base of walls
This also helps reduce moisture retention around the house—which can affect paint adhesion.
  5. Consider the Weather
Brisbane weather is a major factor in outdoor painting. Paint should not be applied if:
It’s raining or forecast to rain within 24 hours
    It’s below 10°C or above 35°C
    Humidity is extremely high
A good painting contractor will monitor forecasts and adjust timing as needed.
  6. Discuss Colour Choices Early
Some customers change their minds last-minute. While it’s totally fine to ask questions and explore options, delays in colour decisions can hold up the job.
Tip: Try sample pots of your favourite colours and test them on a small section of wall a few days before work begins.
  7. Secure Pets and Provide Access
If you have dogs or other pets, make arrangements to keep them safe and away from work areas. Let your painters know about access to gates, garage doors, or locks so the job can flow smoothly without delays.
